🌍 THE ATMOSPHERE
TOPIC 04 · TROPOSPHERE · STRATOSPHERE · FIVE LAYERS · PRESSURE
PAGE 1 OF 5, A SHELL OF GAS, HELD BY GRAVITY
AIR = NOT NOTHING
THE ATMOSPHERE IN ONE BREATH
The atmosphere is the envelope of gases bound to Earth by gravity. It is mostly nitrogen (N₂, ~78%) and oxygen (O₂, ~21%) for breathing — plus argon, water vapour, CO₂, and trace gases. It has mass: the weight of the whole column of air presses down on the surface (that is air pressure). Without it, no sound like we know it, no liquid water on the surface, and lethal solar and cosmic radiation. It is our blanket — thin compared to Earth's radius, but everything to life.
🧪 SCALE
If Earth were a basketball, the entire atmosphere would be a thinner skin than a sticker — yet it is roughly 100 km+ to where we say "space" begins for many practical uses.
HOLD!
N₂ / O₂
Mix is almost the same everywhere in the lower layers — water vapour is the variable
1 BAR
Mean sea-level pressure is about 1013 hPa (roughly 1 "atmosphere")
PAGE 2 OF 5, TROPOSPHERE: WHERE WEATHER LIVES
~0–12 KM
COLDER AS YOU CLIMB (USUALLY)
The troposphere is the lowest layer — where we live, birds fly, and almost all "weather" is made (winds, clouds, storms). Here temperature typically drops with height (the lapse rate), which helps convection and cloud formation. The tropopause is the "lid" at the top where the drop slows — jet streams snake along this boundary. Height varies: thicker at the equator, a bit shallower at the poles. Topic 1 already told you most of the show is in this thin slice.

CLOUDS
Ninety-nine percent of water vapour lives in the troposphere
MT. EVEREST
Still inside the troposphere — but air is thin — climbers use oxygen
BEND
Jet stream: fast river of air near the tropopause
PAGE 3 OF 5, STRATOSPHERE: OZONE & SMOOTH RIDE
O₃
Ozone absorbs harsh UV — warms the layer — "turns temperature up with height" here
JET
Passenger jets cruise in the lower stratosphere — less turbulent weather, faster trips
~12–50 KM
THE SHIELD LAYER
The stratosphere sits above the weather in everyday terms. It holds the ozone layer — O₃ that soaks up most incoming UV-C and much UV-B before it can burn your skin. Volcanic eruptions can hurl sun-reflecting aerosols into the stratosphere and cool the planet for a year or two. Chlorine-based pollutants once damaged ozone over Antarctica — global treaties have been healing that hole. Big picture: this layer = sunscreen at planetary scale.

PAGE 4 OF 5, MESO & THERMO: COLD, THEN HOT, THEN THIN
STILL WITH US, BUT RAREFIED
SHOOTING STARS & GLOWING GAS
Mesosphere (~50–80 km): coldest part of the column — meteors burn up as shooting stars. Thermosphere (above, hundreds of km): very hot in terms of particle speed, but the air is so thin a thermometer there would not feel a hot "day" like on the ground — not enough molecules to pass heat. Aurora (north/south lights) and ISS orbit in this rarified realm. Think elevation + vacuum, not a hot bath.
GLOW!
STREAK
Dust specks from space = brief bright lines — mesopause is chilly
AURORA
Charged solar particles excite gas — curtains of light
ORBIT
ISS still skims a trace of air — must re-boost orbits
PAGE 5 OF 5, EXOSPHERE: FADING TO BLACK
NO HARD LINE
EARTH → SPACE IS A SLOPE
The exosphere is the outermost atmosphere — gas so sparse that atoms can fly hundreds of km before colliding, and the lightest (hydrogen) leaks to space over long times. There is no single fence where air stops; models pick ~100–500–1000 km for different "edges." Next on the weather journey, Topic 5 (Air pressure) on the hub zooms in on the invisible weight of all these layers that you feel as weather maps with H and L — the force that moves wind.
🧠 YOU ARE HERE
You spend your whole life in the bottom sliver of the troposphere — but the whole stack protects the biosphere. Same sky, all connected.
