🌤️ WHAT IS WEATHER & WHY?
TOPIC 01 · ATMOSPHERE · SUN · AIR · WATER VAPOUR
PAGE 1 OF 5, THE ATMOSPHERE IN ACTION
NOT CLIMATE
WEATHER = THE AIR ON A SHORT TIMER
Weather is the state of the troposphere (the lowest layer) right now and over the next few days, temperature, humidity, wind, clouds, and precipitation. Climate is the long average of that behaviour over years. Same planet: weather is one episode; climate is the whole series. Everything you feel outside, gusts, drizzle, heat shimmer, is air and water in motion, driven by the Sun and Earth's spin.
📌 REMEMBER
Meteorologists focus on the lower ~12 km where almost all of our "weather lives", above that, different story.

PAGE 2 OF 5, THE SUN TILTS THE BALANCE
UNEVEN HEAT
NO EVEN HEATING, NO STORY
The Sun blasts the same 174 petawatts of energy toward Earth, but the surface is a patchwork: equator gets more direct rays, poles get less, land heats and cools faster than ocean, and ice reflects while dark soil swallows heat. The atmosphere cannot sit still: warm air rises, cold air rushes in to replace it, cells of circulation form at planetary scale. That is the beginning of wind systems and the water cycle’s fuel.
HEAT!

Rising plumes: thermals, storm towers
OCEAN
Evaporation feeds the sky a river of water vapour
MILE
A warm kilogram of air can hold more H₂O than a cold one
PAGE 3 OF 5, RISE, COOL, CONDENSE
DEW PT
Cool air "fills up" with water until droplets form
CLOUD
Dust & salt give vapour a surface to condense on
BILLIONS OF TINY DROPS
WHY CLOUDS & FOG HAPPEN
Rising air expands and cools adiabatically. If it chills to the dew point, water vapour condenses on aerosol particles into droplets (or sublimates to ice), a cloud is born. Same process at the ground: fog. The weather engine is, in one line: heat creates motion; motion cools air; cooling turns vapour into visible water.

PAGE 4 OF 5, PRESSURE & THE WIND RUSH
BALANCE
AIR WEIGHS ON YOU, PRESSURE MAPS
The entire column of air has mass, we call that barometric (air) pressure. Differences in heating create low-pressure zones (rising air) and high-pressure zones (sinking air). Air accelerates from high to low along the path, and wind is just that flow, curved and steered by Earth's spin (Coriolis) and surface friction. So "why is it blowing?" = redistribute heat until pressure balances, never perfectly.
FLOW!
H
H on maps = high, often calmer, fairer
L
L = low, rising air, more clouds & rain chance
SPIN
Earth rotation bends the wind, big storms spin
PAGE 5 OF 5, LOOK UP, REASON, FORECAST
SAME PRINCIPLES
PUTTING THE SHOW TOGETHER
Every forecast still rests on a stack of physics: thermodynamics, fluid flow, and phase change of water. We add satellite eyes, weather balloons, radar, and supercomputers to simulate the next hours and days. You do not need a supercomputer to start: notice wind shift, see clouds build, feel humidity climb, and you are already doing citizen meteorology. Weather happens because the Sun keeps throwing energy at a wet, spinning planet; we just learn to read the motion.

The next topic on the hub, the water cycle, zooms in on how that water recycles. Same sky, new chapter.
