In Greek myth his name is Heracles, which means glory of Hera, even though the queen of the gods did not enjoy his birth story. His father was Zeus and his mother was a human queen named Alcmene, so he was born with extra strength and a big destiny. Hera sent snakes into his cradle when he was a baby, and the tiny hero squeezed them until they went still. That early tale tells you the kind of life he would lead: huge danger, huge courage, and trouble from jealous powers.
⚡ DID YOU KNOW?
Roman storytellers kept almost the same adventures but used the Latin name Hercules. That is the spelling you see on old statues and in many modern cartoons.
POWER!
ZEUS
⚡ Zeus ruled thunder and law from Olympus. When he took an interest in a mortal family, their children could inherit spark like lightning in their muscles. 🏛️ Temple art often shows Zeus handing a tiny hero to nurses, a reminder that gods and humans share one crowded story world.
HERA
👑 Hera protected marriage and watched Zeus closely. Myths say she chased Heracles with trials because she hated proof of her husband's wandering eye. 🌩️ Her anger is not fair to a child, yet it makes the stories ask how people handle blame that never really belonged to them.

ORACLE
A HEAVY PRICE, A LONG LIST
Later myths say Heracles fell into a fit sent by Hera and hurt people he loved. When clarity returned, his heart broke. The oracle at Delphi told him to serve his cousin King Eurystheus in the city of Tiryns for years and do every task the king ordered. Eurystheus was nervous about the muscled hero standing nearby, so he invented one horrible job after another, hoping each creature or puzzle would finish the labours for him. Instead, the list became the most famous checklist in mythology.
SERVE!
KING
🏰 Eurystheus sat on a throne but acted like a frightened boss, hiding in jars when he heard what Heracles had killed next. 📜 Each labour had to be proved with trophies or witnesses, so the hero could not simply walk away and say he tried.
DELPHI
🔮 Pilgrims climbed a mountain path to ask Apollo's priestess hard questions. 🌿 Her answer for Heracles was blunt: work off the stain through service, do not hide from it.
SHAME
💔 Greek heroes are not plastic action figures. They make awful mistakes and still have to choose what to do next. 🤝 Friends like Theseus reminded Heracles that he was more than his worst day.
PAGE 3 OF 5 · LION, HYDRA, AND GOLDEN DEER
LION
🦁 The Nemean lion wore skin so tough that bronze blades bounced off. 🛡️ Heracles strangled it, then wore the pelt like armour, which artists still paint today.
HYDRA
🐍 The swamp monster in Lerna grew two heads whenever one was cut, unless a friend cauterised the neck fast. 🔥 Working as a team turned a hopeless fight into a finished labour.
SPEED
CATCH THE CERYNEIAN HIND
One labour sent the hero after a golden horned deer sacred to the goddess Artemis. He could not shoot it without angering heaven, so he ran for a full year until the animal tired, then lifted it gently and carried it back alive. Another labour chased a giant boar through snow on a mountain. Each task mixed brawn with patience and respect for rules that even kings must follow.
CHASE!

DIRTY JOB
SMARTER THAN THE STABLES
King Augeas owned thousands of cattle and had ignored the mess for years. Heracles bet he could clean the yards in one day. He did not grab a tiny shovel. He tore two holes in the stable walls and let a nearby river rush through, flushing filth downstream. Eurystheus tried to cheat and say that labour did not count because water helped, so the hero had to argue his case with words as well as muscle.
RINSE!
APPLES
🍎 Golden apples of immortality grew in a garden guarded by a dragon and nymphs called the Hesperides. 🌍 Heracles asked Atlas the sky bearer to fetch them, then tricked him into taking the heavens back before Atlas could leave him crushed.
DOG
🐕 Cerberus has three heads, a dragon tail, and a bark that echoes in the underworld. ✋ Heracles wrapped the beast in his lion cloak and carried it up to daylight, scaring Eurystheus under his throne.
BELT
🛡️ Another mission asked for the war belt of the Amazon queen Hippolyta. 🤝 At first she listened politely, but rumours stirred her warriors into battle, so Heracles had to calm the storm with words after the spears started flying.

LEGEND
FROM PAIN TO CONSTELLATION
Stories say Heracles died on a pyre and Zeus lifted his soul to Olympus, giving him a seat among the gods and a goddess wife named Hebe, cup bearer of youth. Romans built him temples, Renaissance painters loved his muscles, and astronomers named the Hercules star cluster after him. Kids still meet him in comics because his path says you can turn impossible homework lists into proof of courage if you keep going and ask friends for help when the hydra grows extra heads.
HERO!
COUNT
🔢 Traditional lists name twelve labours, even though Eurystheus rejected two early tries and added extras so the total count stayed fair. 📝 Memorising the whole list is a fun party trick for mythology fans.
