📏 COUNTING TO 100: THE LINE
TOPIC 05 · 1–100 · ORDER · SEQUENCE
PAGE 1 OF 5, A LINE IS A PROMISE
ORDER
Number line stretching from zero to one hundred showing order of numbers
RIGHT = MORE, LEFT = LESS
Draw a straight line, pick a starting tick (often 0), and march to the right with equal spaces between neighbours. That picture is a number line: it shows the order of whole numbers in a way your eyes can trust. Counting to 100 is the same rule repeated: each next number is exactly one more than the one before, the successor idea. There is no biggest in the full line, but one hundred is a classroom finish line: two digits, three sounds in English ("one, hundred"), and a satisfying round box to open in your head.
📍 SPACING
On a standard whole-number line, the gap from 7 to 8 is the same size as from 97 to 98, one step, every time.

CHART
Hundreds chart folded to show how rows form a continuous number line
A LINE, BUT FOLDED INTO ROWS
A hundreds chart (1 through 100 in a 10×10 grid) is secretly a bent number line: read left to right, jump down at the end of a row, and the order is preserved. The last column (10, 20,…, 100) is the multiples of 10, a super-highway. Moving one step right is +1; moving one row down is +10. You can whisper-count to 100, chant by tens, or point on a poster, same numbers, different dance moves. When a teacher says "What comes after 79?" your line-brain and your grid-brain should high-five at 80.
🔁 PATTERN
In the chart, the ones digit cycles 1→2→…→9 then bumps the tens, place value, made visible in a square.

MAP

NAVIGATE WITH LANDMARKS
Mentally walking from, say, 34 to 86 is easier if you do not name every pebble. Strong students learn bridges: reach the next ten (40), then the next big ten (80), then tweak. Landmarks 25, 50, 75, 100 split 0–100 into friendly quarters (think of a race or a square poster). A number line in the classroom (or drawn with chalk on the ground) is not decoration, it is a map. Your finger sliding along the line is measurement in disguise: same step size, same story as a ruler, later.

PAGE 4 OF 5, BIG JUMPS: SKIP TO 100
SKIP
Number line showing skip counting by twos fives and tens with arrows
2s, 5s, 10s, SAME LINE, BIGGER HOPS
Skip counting is still a number line, you just land on a subset of the ticks. Count by 2s to hit every even: 2, 4, 6… 100. Count by 5s (think fingers on a hand) to end at 100 on the fives: 5, 10, 15… By 10s you use the tens as stairs: 10, 20, 30… 100 in ten even jumps. Each pattern is a rehearsal for multiplication and for reading clocks and money. You are not "skipping the truth", you are filtering the line to see a rhythm. Try whispering, clapping, or drawing arcs, your brain loves music + maths together.
🥁 RHYTHM
Every skip pattern is the answer to "What plus itself many times?", a sneak preview of "how many groups."

FINISH / START
Number line from start to finish representing a complete counting journey
YOU CAN SEE THE JOURNEY
Reaching 100 on purpose, not by memorising a song only, but by trusting the line, builds confidence for every bigger "how far?" to come. Rulers, thermometers, timelines, even video-game progress bars borrow the same order + equal steps + landmarks recipe. The next big skill is to say which of two numbers is greater without counting every floor from zero; Topic 6 is ready with symbols and "alligator" memory tricks, but the line is already the honest judge: right is more (for the positives we have focused on). Keep drawing lines, keep whispering the sequence, and when you forget, make a twenty-tick mini-line on scrap paper, mathematicians do that, too.
🧁 TAKEAWAY
Line = order · +1 = next neighbour · Chart = folded line · Landmarks: 25, 50, 75, 100 · Skip counts = hop patterns · 100 is a win, not a wall, counting keeps going.

📏 KEY FACTS
Equal steps · +1 to the right · Tens are big jumps · 100 = two-digit milestone · Skip patterns preview multiplication · The line is your honest picture of order.
✅ Check: "Is this number later on the line?"
