Every other big cat on Earth is solitary. Tigers hunt alone. Leopards hunt alone. Jaguars hunt alone. But lions? Lions are different. They live together in family groups called prides, up to 15 or 20 lions, all working together. A pride is like a superorganism. Alone, a lion is powerful. But together? Together, they are unstoppable.
Why would lions evolve to live in groups? The answer is prey. On the open savanna, prey animals gather in huge herds. One lion can't bring down a wildebeest alone. But five lions, working together, can hunt anything.

THE HUNT: A MASTERCLASS IN TEAMWORK
A lion pride hunts like a military unit with assigned roles. The 'driver' lions chase prey forward at full speed. The 'flankers' run parallel on both sides, cutting off escape routes. The 'chaser' maintains pressure from behind. And the male, sometimes he waits ahead to ambush as prey flees. The prey animal is doomed. It can't run left (flanker). It can't run right (flanker). It can't go back (chaser). Teamwork kills.
Single lion success rate: 25%. Pride success rate: 75%! That's three times more effective.

DEFENDING THE KINGDOM
THE MALE'S JOB: PROTECTOR
While females hunt, males patrol the territory borders. They mark with scent (spraying) and sound (roaring). When rival males approach, a battle erupts. These are savage, bloody fights. Manes protect the neck and face. Claws rake at flanks. The loser is forced out or killed. The winner controls the pride—and every cub born there.
A male lion only controls a pride for 2–3 years. Then younger males arrive, and he must fight to keep his crown—or lose it.

Lion calves wrestle, chase, and pounce endlessly. This isn't just fun—it's graduate school in hunting. Young lions practice stalk-and-chase movements. They learn which movements work. By age 2, they've rehearsed every hunting technique thousands of times. When they join an actual hunt, they're ready. Play teaches survival.
