🌐 HOW THE INTERNET WORKS
TOPIC 01 · NETWORKING · PROTOCOLS · DATA
THE BIG QUESTION
🌐
What IS the Internet?
The internet is not a cloud, a satellite, or magic. It is billions of physical computers connected by cables — most of them under the ocean floor. Right now, data is flowing through 1.2 million kilometres of undersea fibre optic cable.
"I'm not in the cloud. I'm in the sea."
BY THE NUMBERS
⚡ FAST FACTS
🌍 5.4 billion internet users
💾 5 million TB of data daily
🔌 400+ submarine cables
⚡ Data travels at 2/3 speed of light
KEY TERM
📦 PACKET: Data is broken into small chunks called packets. Your video call is thousands of packets per second, reassembled at the other end.
JOURNEY OF A PACKET
ZAP!!!
YOUR DATA TRAVELS HALFWAY AROUND THE WORLD IN 0.1 SECONDS
You type a URL. Your browser breaks your request into packets. Each packet hops through 10–20 routers in different countries before reaching the server. The server sends packets back. They arrive in random order and are reassembled perfectly.
STEP 1: DNS
🔍 NAME LOOKUP
You type "google.com". Your computer asks a DNS server: "What IP address is that?" It replies: "142.250.80.46". Now your device knows where to go.
STEP 2: ROUTING
🗺️ FINDING THE PATH
Routers are the internet's post offices. Each reads the destination IP and decides the fastest next hop. BGP lets routers worldwide share routing maps in real time.
STEP 3: TCP/IP
📋 THE RULES
TCP ensures every packet arrives in order. IP handles addressing. Together they're the internet's rulebook — agreed upon by every device on Earth since 1983.

HTTPS EXPLAINED
🔒
The Padlock in Your Browser
When you see HTTPS, your browser and server performed a "TLS handshake" — exchanging encryption keys in milliseconds. All data between you is now scrambled. Even your internet provider can't read it.
WHO OWNS THE INTERNET?
📋 No one — it's a network of networks
🏢 ISPs own cables to your home
🌊 Private companies own undersea cables
🌐 ICANN manages domain names

WI-FI vs INTERNET
Wi-Fi is just the wireless link from your device to your router. The internet is everything beyond — the global network of cables, routers, and servers.

UNDERSEA CABLES
🌊
1.2 Million KM Under the Sea
Fibre optic cables thinner than a garden hose carry 99% of international internet traffic. Sharks occasionally bite them. Fishing anchors cut them. A single break can disrupt internet for entire countries.

WHAT IS AI?
🤖
Teaching Machines to Think
Artificial Intelligence is not a robot with feelings. It's pattern recognition at enormous scale. Show a machine 10 million photos of cats, and it learns what a cat looks like — without anyone writing rules about fur, ears, or whiskers.
"I didn't learn the rules. I found the patterns."
AI vs ML vs DL
🧠 DEFINITIONS
🤖 AI: Machines doing smart things
📊 ML: Machines learning from data
🧠 Deep Learning: Neural nets with many layers
💬 LLM: AI trained on text
ALAN TURING · 1950
Asked: "Can machines think?" He proposed the Turing Test — if a machine can fool a human in conversation, it's "intelligent." We're still debating his answer.

NEURAL NETWORKS
LEARN!!!
MODELLED ON THE HUMAN BRAIN — 86 BILLION NEURONS
A neural network has layers of nodes. Data flows in, gets weighted, passes to the next layer. During training, the network adjusts its weights billions of times until outputs match the correct answers. GPT-4 has approximately 1.8 trillion parameters.

📚 LABELLED EXAMPLES
Show the AI labelled examples: "this is a cat, this is a dog." It learns to distinguish them. Most image recognition and spam filters work this way.
UNSUPERVISED
🔍 FIND PATTERNS
No labels given. The AI groups data by similarity on its own. Used in recommendation systems — "people who watched X also watched Y." Netflix uses this on you.
REINFORCEMENT
🎮 TRIAL & ERROR
AI gets rewarded for good actions, penalised for bad ones. AlphaGo mastered the ancient game Go this way — beating the world champion in 2016.

HOW CHATGPT WORKS
💬
Predicting the Next Word
Large Language Models read hundreds of billions of words from the internet. They learn: given this sequence of words, what comes next? Do this at enormous scale with enough parameters, and you get something that appears to understand language.

THE BIG QUESTION
Does AI "understand" anything? Most researchers say no — it's extraordinarily sophisticated pattern matching. But the output is so good the line is blurring.
AI RISKS
⚠️
The Concerns Are Real
Bias (AI trained on biased data is biased), deepfakes, job displacement, autonomous weapons, and the long-term risk of AI systems pursuing goals misaligned with human values — these are serious problems being actively researched.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
📌 REMEMBER THIS
✦ AI learns patterns from data, not rules

✦ Neural networks model the brain's structure

✦ LLMs predict the next word at scale

✦ Three types: supervised, unsupervised, reinforcement

✦ AI has real risks — bias, deepfakes, misalignment

TOPIC 03: QUANTUM COMPUTING
💻 TECHNOLOGY  ·  9 PANELS  ·  THE COMPUTER THAT THINKS IN PARALLEL UNIVERSES
PAGE 1 — BITS VS QUBITS
PANEL 1
THE QUANTUM REVOLUTION

Every classical computer — from your laptop to the world's most powerful supercomputer — processes information using bits: tiny switches that are either 0 or 1. A quantum computer uses qubits (quantum bits) that exploit the laws of quantum physics to be 0 AND 1 simultaneously — a property called superposition. This single idea unleashes a completely new kind of computation unlike anything that came before.

"A quantum computer doesn't just run faster — it computes in a fundamentally different way that classical computers can never replicate, no matter how powerful!"
MIND-BENDING FACT
A system of 300 qubits can represent more states simultaneously than there are atoms in the observable universe!
PANEL 2
SUPERPOSITION

A classical bit is like a light switch — either on or off. A qubit is like a spinning coin — while it spins, it is BOTH heads AND tails at once. Only when you observe it (measure it) does it "choose" a definite state. This means a quantum computer with many qubits can explore an enormous number of possible solutions to a problem simultaneously, rather than one at a time.

0 AND 1!

BOTH AT THE SAME TIME

Classical computers must try every combination one by one. Quantum computers can hold all combinations at once — it's like checking every path in a maze simultaneously rather than exploring them one at a time!

PAGE 2 — QUANTUM SUPERPOWERS
PANEL 4
ENTANGLEMENT

One of quantum computing's most powerful tools is entanglement — a phenomenon where two qubits become linked so that the state of one instantly affects the other, no matter how far apart they are. Einstein called it "spooky action at a distance." Entangled qubits allow quantum computers to process and correlate information in ways classical computers fundamentally cannot, enabling extraordinarily complex calculations.

QUANTUM FACT
Entanglement has been demonstrated over distances of 1,200 km — two particles linked across the width of a continent, responding instantly to each other!
PANEL 5
QUANTUM GATES

Quantum computers are programmed using quantum gates — operations that manipulate qubits in ways that exploit superposition and entanglement. Unlike classical logic gates (AND, OR, NOT), quantum gates can transform a qubit's superposition state and create entanglement between qubits. A quantum algorithm is a carefully designed sequence of gates that steers the quantum state toward the right answer with high probability.

"Programming a quantum computer is more like composing a symphony than writing code — you guide interference patterns to amplify the right answers and cancel the wrong ones."
PANEL 6
QUANTUM ADVANTAGE

In 2019, Google claimed "quantum supremacy" — their 53-qubit Sycamore processor performed a specific calculation in 200 seconds that they claimed would take the world's best supercomputer 10,000 years. IBM disputed the claim, but the achievement showed quantum computers can outperform classical computers at specific tasks. The race to build practical, error-free quantum computers is one of the most intense in science and technology.

BREAKTHROUGH
Google's 2019 quantum supremacy experiment used just 53 qubits — future machines with thousands of qubits will be incomparably more powerful!
PAGE 3 — WHAT QUANTUM COMPUTERS CAN DO
PANEL 7
DRUG DISCOVERY & CHEMISTRY

Simulating molecules is fantastically difficult for classical computers — even simulating a medium-sized molecule requires more computing power than exists on Earth. Quantum computers, by their very nature, operate according to the same quantum rules as molecules themselves. This makes them perfectly suited for drug discovery, designing new materials, and solving climate problems by finding better catalysts for carbon capture and clean energy production.

"A quantum computer that can perfectly simulate molecular chemistry could design a drug for cancer or discover a room-temperature superconductor in years, not decades."
PANEL 8
CRYPTOGRAPHY & LIMITS

Quantum computers threaten to break modern encryption — the security that protects every bank account, message, and website on the internet. Shor's algorithm, running on a powerful quantum computer, could crack the RSA encryption that secures the internet in hours rather than millions of years. However, quantum computers also have limits — they are extremely fragile, error-prone, and work only in near-absolute-zero temperatures. Practical quantum computers for everyday use are still years or decades away.

SECURITY ALERT
Governments and companies are already preparing "post-quantum cryptography" — new encryption methods that even quantum computers can't break!
