Ancient poets pictured Zeus seated above the storm line on Mount Olympus, beard bright as cloud edges, eyes that could brighten a valley or darken an army. He was not the oldest being in the universe, yet after the wars of the gods he became the one mortals called father of gods and men. His word set seasons, his nod shook the peaks, and his eagle crossed the sky like a moving omen. Cities built him high altars because the sky touches everyone, farmer and sailor alike.
